What is ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ by India Govt

Two new web portals were recently launched by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications. These portals — ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ — were introduced to modernise India’s address and geospatial infrastructure. This step has been taken in line with the National Geospatial Policy 2022.

What is ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’

What Is DIGIPIN?

A digital address system called DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) has been developed. It was designed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. This system has been created to support Address-as-a-Service (AaaS) and is based on open-source, grid-based geolocation.

Features of the ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ Portal:

  • DIGIPIN can be retrieved using the user’s current geolocation.
  • Latitude and longitude coordinates can also be used to find or reverse-find a DIGIPIN.
  • Accuracy in logistics, delivery, and emergency services is expected to be improved.
  • The system has been adopted under the National Geospatial Policy and is available for use by governments, institutions, and the public.
  • The complete source code and technical documentation have been made available on GitHub to encourage open use and innovation.

By using DIGIPIN, last-mile delivery in rural and remote areas is expected to be made more efficient. The adoption of GIS-based digital services will also be enabled by this system.

What Is the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ Portal?

The six-digit PIN Code system, which has existed since 1972, has now been enhanced using geospatial technology. A national-level geo-fencing exercise was conducted to geo-reference all PIN code boundaries.

Features of the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ Portal:

  • The correct PIN code for any location can now be found using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) features.
  • Feedback can be submitted by users to improve the accuracy of the data.
  • The full dataset of geo-fenced PIN code boundaries has been uploaded on the Open Government Data Platform for public access.

A Unified Move Towards Digital India

This launch was described by Ms. Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts, as a step toward precision governance and digital transformation. Through these portals, every citizen — including those in remote areas — can now be digitally located and served.

The Department is playing a new role as an enabler of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), beyond its traditional responsibilities as a postal service provider.

How to Access the Portals

Both platforms are live and accessible through the India Post official website:

Citizens Are Encouraged to Participate

Feedback and suggestions are actively being invited from users. Both platforms offer options to submit input on usability and data accuracy. This citizen participation will help improve the system continuously and ensure that the data stays relevant and updated.

Through this initiative, India Post is strengthening its digital services and reaffirming its place as a key contributor to India’s evolving digital and geospatial landscape.
