Users report that while UPI via contacts or bank accounts still works, the camera fails to open, making it impossible to scan codes for merchant payments.

What’s Causing the Issue?

This appears to be a software bug introduced with recent iOS updates. The issue is especially common on iPhones like the iPhone 12 Pro, 13, and 14, 15 and iPhone 16 Pro Max where:

  • Google Pay’s QR scanner goes black or does not work on iPhone
  • The front camera works, but the rear camera doesn’t
  • Restarting the app doesn’t help
  1. Update iOS to the Latest Version
Users have found success after updating to the latest available iOS version via:
Settings > General > Software Update
  2. Force Close and Reopen the App
Swipe up from the bottom and close Google Pay, then relaunch it.
  3. Restart Your iPhone
In some cases, a full reboot helps — although only temporarily.
  4. Switch Camera Modes Temporarily
Open the native Camera app and:
    • Switch between front and back cameras
    • Try changing from Photo to Video mode
    • Use zoom levels like 0.5x, 1x, or 2x

Then go back and reopen Google Pay.

  1. Use Another App That Accesses Camera First
Open Snapchat, Instagram, or your Camera app to “wake up” the rear camera, then switch back to Google Pay.
